Antonio Abbondi

Known as lo Scarpagnino, Abbondi was one of the busiest builders in early sixteenth-century Venice, working in the transition from Gothic to Renaissance rather than decisively in either.
After the fire of 1514 destroyed the Rialto commercial district he was heavily involved in its rebuilding. He also worked on the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, where the sequence of the staircase and upper hall is largely his, later filled with Tintoretto's paintings.
His birth date is not established and the record of his training is incomplete. He died around 1549.
