Brittany Region Guide

Overview

Once an independent Celtic kingdom, the French province of Brittany is a vast peninsula situated on the Northwestern part of France. It is surrounded by the English Channel to the North and the Bay of Biscay in the South. For a while, the province of Brittany has been called as Less or Lesser Britain in contrast to Great Britain in the United Kingdom.

Brittany provides any traveler a remarkable blend of the natural, the man-made and the unknown, making any trip to Brittany one that you will never ever forget. Being situated in between two water bodies, Brittany has some of the most picturesque seascapes found in all of France.

One place you should not miss is the Côte de Granit Rose, which translates to “Pink Granite Coast.” This coastline is located in Cotes d’Armor and stretches for more than thirty kilometers. The coast gets its name from the rare pink granite that you can find here, giving the coast its unusual color. It is one of the only three places in the world where you can find pink granite, with the other two being China and Corsica.

Brittany is home to a number of different manors, châteaux and fortified towns dating back to hundreds of years. One of the most popular tourist attractions is the walled city of Saint-Malo, which had once been one of the important ports that allowed Brittany to trade with England and the Channel Islands.

Brittany is also the site of many megalithic monuments. Although these monuments are scattered all over the peninsula, the purpose of these monuments remain unknown. Adding to its mysteriousness is the fact that locals appear to be hesitant to entertain any inquiries about the purpose and origins of these monuments.
