Algarve Region Guide

Overview

The Algarve, located in the most southern region of Portugal, is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe. From vast landscapes of olive groves, traditional whitewashed villages, to the wild west coast with its dramatic cliffs and lively coastal resorts in the desired central region. Faro is the region’s capital, the charming Lagos has its strategic position at the sea, while Sagres is the most westerly town in the Algarve. Amidst the olive trees, Silves is best known for its red sandstone castle, while Tavira is an elegant city packed with Renaissance monuments and castles.

The South Coast

The most 'populated' and famous town in the southern Algarve region is Albufeira. This major holiday destination boasts fine sand beaches sheltered by cliffs that rise from the turquoise blue sea. Albufeira is internationally renowned for the beauty and diversity of its beaches, and rightly because they are all delightful. Enjoy, a beautiful day on the nearby beach at Praia de Barranco de Belharucas. Alternatively, visit Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo, and relax on the Praia do Garrão beach with several beach restaurants and bars.

The West Coast

Precipitous sea cliffs, wide-open beaches, and the rough Atlantic Ocean define the character of the Algarve's west coast. This wild and remote stretch of coastline - where traditional villages dot the landscape - is home to some spectacular sandy beaches like Praia da Bordeira, Praia do Amado, and Praia da Arrifana. The entire region lies within the perimeters of the Natural Park "Alentejano e Costa Vicentina", that hosts beautiful footpaths, famous for its wild and rugged scenery.

Serra de Monchique

The verdant slopes of the mountain range 'Serra de Monchique' are packed with chestnut and eucalyptus trees, providing a habitat for many wildlife. The area offers plenty of nature trails including the track that leads to the highest point (900m) of the Algarve, Fóia.

Fun & Food

Furthermore, the Algarve offers many opportunities for outdoor activities. Go fishing, boating, windsurfing, hiking, biking, or golfing. The Algarve is one of the finest golf destinations in Europe, the greatly designed golf courses, together with the amazing landscapes in which they are situated, satisfy the needs of the most demanding golf enthusiasts.

Foodies will love the aromas and flavors of the traditional Portuguese cuisine that are served in low key restaurants for very reasonable prices or visit authentic food markets – such as the Arabian Style food market in Loulé - with fresh produce, fish, cheese and good local wines.

When to go

With 300 sunny days per year, the Algarve is attractive at any season. July and August are the warmest and excellent for sunbathing at the ‘refreshing’ sea, while spring and fall are the perfect periods for active travelers to visit the region. The days are clear and sunny, whereas the night brings cool air making day temperatures comfortable; thus, perfect for sightseeing and golfing.
