The principality of Asturias is situated along the northern region of
Spain. It is considered as an autonomous community and is bordered by Cantabria in the east, Castilla y León in the south, the Cantabrian Sea in the north, and Galicia to the west.
Asturias is a region known for its picturesque landscapes. One of the favorite destinations of travelers visiting this region is the Picos de Europa National Park. Literally translated as “Peaks of Europe”, this national park is a haven for mountaineers, climbers and mountain walkers. Picu Urriellu and Naranjo de Bulnes are considered to be some of the most favorite mountain climbing sites in the park. Apart from mountain climbing, travelers can also enjoy exploring the many networks of caves that can be found in the park. Some of these caves are considered to be the deepest in the country. Others come to watch the sun go down while staring out to El Naranjo de Bulnes. Apart from the spectacular sunset they can enjoy here, they would also be able to watch this peak turn orange in color, a phenomenon similar to that of Ayer’s Rock in Australia.
Asturias is also home to some of the finest samples of architecture. Many of these buildings and infrastructures date as far back as during the Pre-Romanesque period. Some of these include the Santa Maria del Naranco Church and the Palace of San Miguel de Lillo. Situated in the region’s capital of Oviedo, these two buildings were built by the first Asturian kings of the region.
