Considered as the biggest city in the state of North Carolina, Charlotte is presently the seat of Mackenburg County. About 731,424 “Charlotteans” thrive in the 17th largest city in the United States.
Hailed as the “Queen City,” Charlotte was named after Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the queen consort of King George III a year prior to the founding of the city.
Thomas Spratt and his family were the first European settlers of Charlotte, when they occupied the present area of the Elizabeth neighborhood in 1755.
Charlotte is also tagged as “The Hornet’s Nest,” because of General Cornwallis’ remark that the city was “a hornet’s nest of rebellion” when he was exiled by unfriendly citizens.
Charlotte also goes by the name the “City of Churches,” because Baptist, Episcopalian, Methodist, Lutheran, Presbyterian, and Catholic churches abound in the city.
This busy town is also the home of the Bank of America, one of the biggest financial institutions in the country.
Charlotte is a favorite place for motors ports enthusiasts, as it is the home of the NASCAR Hall of fame, and many NASCAR offices. It is also the location of the zMAX Drag way and the NHRA drag strip.
In 2012, Charlotte will be the host to the Democratic National Convention.
