On the James River in Virginia lies its capital city, Richmond. This city is in the heart of Virginia State. Richmond was a very important village of the Powhatan Confederacy, and in 1609 and 1610-11, was settled by English colonists from Jamestown. It is surrounded by the counties of Henrico and Chesterfield. Richmond, as we know it today, was established in 1737. In 1780, it was made capital of the Colony and Dominion of Virginia. It played a prominent role as the capital city of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. Today, Richmond town is a modern banking and industrial center, manufacturing tobacco, printing, papermaking and chemicals. It is home to two universities and has some impressive relics dating back to the American independence movement and former capital of the Confederation.
