One of the best preserved historic towns in Australia, Evandale is a charismatic Georgian village that is located along the South Esk River, just a short drive from Launceston. Its streets are lined with late-Georgian and early-Victorian buildings, some of which date back to 1809.
Take a step back in time as you wander around the town and explore the High Street, one of the most beautiful of its kind in Tasmania. Admire the former Presbyterian Manse that dates to 1840 and the former hotel of “Blenheim” that was built in 1832. Also of note is St. Andrews Uniting Church, renowned for its Doric columns, and the charming Clarendon Stores. There are plenty of quaint cafes where you can grab a coffee, as well as unique stores to discover.
History buffs shouldn’t miss a visit to Clarendon Estate, a three-story Georgian house that is one of Australia’s grandest colonial estates. It was built by the wealthy wool grower and merchant, James Cox, in 1838 and includes a heritage walled garden, farm buildings and servants’ quarters, as well as an avenue of rare elms.
Coincide your visit to Evandale with a Sunday when a country-style market takes place, including more than 100 stalls selling local produce and handicrafts. A historic mini steam engine also offers rides on Sundays for young and old. Or visit during the annual Penny Farthing bicycle championships that take place each February. Enthusiasts flock to Evandale from across the world to see these historic bikes being raced through the streets.
