Rio De Janeiro Region Guide

Overview

The city of Rio de Janeiro is the capital city of the country of Brazil. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. It is located at the entrance of Guanabara Bay along the Atlantic coast. The city is fronted by miles of beaches and is set in the remnants of dense tropical forests. Through the Rio passes the Tropic of Capricorn. This accounts for the region’s tropical climate that is warm and humid. However, due to its location, Rio is exposed to the Arctic cold fronts that affect the seasonal temperatures.

Rio de Janeiro is divided into two zones – the central and the South zone. The central zone is home to the city’s colonial waterfront area and various other historical buildings. Some of them are Praca 15 de Novembro, Palacio Tiradentes (that is home to the State legislature), Brazilian Academy of Letters and the Modern Art Museum. The western part consists of the Modern Art Museum, where you can find the spacious Passeio Publico Park in the west. The legislative assembly is nearby.

The Zona Sul is the most desirable living area in Rio. It is home to the Sugar Loaf which is the 395 meter rounded peak that guards the bay entrance. The famous Botanical Garden is another tourist attraction.

Rio de Janeiro is home to numerous white sand beaches and pristine waters. Travelers are treated to a variety of activities in and out of the waters, from diving and wind surfing to working out that tan.
