How Was Amsterdam Built
Amsterdam’s houses are shaped by tax, physics and the absence of solid ground.
Narrow and tall
Plots on the canals were taxed on frontage, so houses were built narrow and deep, typically four to six metres wide and going back thirty. Staircases were consequently steep to the point of being ladders, which is why every house has a hoist beam projecting from the gable: furniture and goods went in through the windows on a rope, and still do.
Leaning forward
Many facades tilt deliberately outward by a few degrees so that a load on the hoist clears the windows below. Others lean because the piles beneath have shifted, and telling the two apart is a local pastime.
Gables
The gable end faces the street and its shape dates the building: stepped in the sixteenth century, spout and bell in the seventeenth, neck gables with scrolled shoulders, and flat cornices in the eighteenth. Many carry a gevelsteen, a carved and painted stone naming the trade or the owner from before street numbering existed.
The planned ring
The canal expansion from 1613 was a single municipal scheme: three arcs of canal, standard plot depths, a warehouse zone in the Jordaan, and building regulations governing height and material. It is one of the earliest large-scale urban plans in Europe and it is still working.
Brick
No local stone, so brick, with sandstone for the trims and a great deal of timber behind the facade.
Building on nothing
Every substantial building here stands on timber piles driven through peat and clay to a sand layer twelve to twenty metres down, and the number under a given building is a matter of local pride. The piles survive indefinitely while permanently submerged and rot within decades if the water table drops, which is why groundwater levels are actively managed and why a programme running into the 2040s is renewing quay walls and bridge foundations across the canal ring — several have partially collapsed in recent years.
