How to Get Around Victoria

Melbourne runs the largest tram network in the world, and the central free tram zone covers most of what a visitor wants. Everything else uses a Myki card, including the airport bus.

A car is needed beyond the city. The Great Ocean Road, the Grampians and the High Country have no practical alternative, though V/Line trains reach Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong and Gippsland usefully.

Drive the Great Ocean Road westbound — the lookouts and the sea are then on the left, which is your side. It takes far longer than the distance suggests; two days is realistic, one is a rush.

Melbourne's toll roads are cashless and billed to the hire car with fees. The city also has hook turns in the centre — right turns made from the left lane — which surprise every visiting driver at least once.
