How to Get Around Bahamas

Getting in. Lynden Pindling International at Nassau is the main airport, with Grand Bahama at Freeport and smaller airports on most inhabited Out Islands. Nassau has US pre-clearance, so travellers to the United States clear immigration before boarding.

Between islands is the expensive part. Bahamasair and a number of small carriers fly from Nassau to the Out Islands; charter flights fill the gaps. The mail boats run freight and passengers from Potter’s Cay in Nassau to almost every settled island — slow, cheap and a genuine experience. Fast ferries serve Eleuthera, the Abacos and the Exumas.

On New Providence. Jitney minibuses cover Nassau cheaply on fixed routes. Taxis are unmetered; agree the fare, or confirm the government rate.

On the Out Islands. Hire cars and golf carts, and very little else. Distances are small and roads are quiet.

Driving is on the left, in cars that are often imported from the United States with the wheel on the left too — which takes some getting used to.
