Practical information for visiting Ottawa
Connectivity & Internet
Air: Ottawa International Airport is south of the centre. O-Train Line 4 connects the terminal directly with South Keys rather than running downtown; passengers transfer to Line 2 and then to the east–west network as needed. The airport also lists taxis, rideshare and an all-day bus service.
Rail: VIA Rail serves Ottawa station at Tremblay on its Ontario–Quebec corridor. Direct trains connect Ottawa with Montreal and Toronto, with onward corridor service toward Quebec City and southwestern Ontario. Book by the exact station rather than assuming the platform is in the downtown core.
Road and coach: Highways connect Ottawa with Montreal, Toronto and border routes. Intercity coach stops can differ by operator and change over time; verify the address and final transit connection.
Digital access: Cellular coverage is generally strong in populated areas but can weaken in rural parts of the large municipality and under heavy event load. Save tickets, accommodation details and one offline map. Government and Parliament security areas may impose their own device or bag rules.

Stay safe (2026 security update)
Use normal large-city precautions in crowds, on transit and around festivals. Keep phones, wallets and bags controlled, and do not leave visible valuables in a parked vehicle. ByWard Market combines nightlife and heavy visitor movement, so plan the late return rather than choosing a route only after venues close.
Parliament Hill and national-event sites have active security. Demonstrations are a normal use of civic space, but closures and screening can change quickly. Do not cross barriers or fly a drone around Parliament; the surrounding airspace is restricted.
Traffic, winter surfaces and waterways are practical hazards. Look for turning vehicles at crossings, use traction in icy conditions and treat river ice as unsafe unless an authorised facility is explicitly open. The Rideau Canal Skateway's status can change with weather.
Call 911 for an immediate police, fire or medical emergency. Use 311 for City information and non-emergency municipal support. Ottawa Alert provides local emergency guidance to subscribed visitors and residents.

Health considerations
Visitors without Ontario health coverage should carry travel insurance appropriate to their residency and trip. Bring regular medication in original packaging and know how the policy handles hospital care, prescriptions and pre-existing conditions.
Cold is the most distinctive seasonal health risk. Frostbite, hypothermia, slips and falls are possible during severe conditions. Check the wind chill, cover exposed skin, wear insulated waterproof footwear and make indoor stops part of the plan rather than an emergency response.
Summer heat, humidity, smoke and poor air quality can also affect a long walking day. Ottawa Public Health recommends attention to the hourly Air Quality Health Index for people with heart or breathing conditions and for caregivers of children. Carry water and move strenuous activity out of the hottest hours during alerts.
Blacklegged ticks that can carry Lyme disease occur in the Ottawa area, Eastern Ontario and the Outaouais. Use approved repellent in wooded or tall-grass habitat, stay on maintained paths where practical and check skin, clothing, children and pets afterward.

Emergency information
Call 911 for a life-threatening medical emergency, fire or crime in progress. Give the civic address, nearest intersection, station, museum entrance or trail marker and stay available for instructions.
Call 311 for City of Ottawa services and non-emergency municipal information. Call 811 for non-emergency health advice in Ontario, and 211 for community and social-service information. These numbers have different purposes; use 911 when delay could endanger someone.
Ottawa Alert is the City's subscription emergency-notification service and can send urgent guidance by app, SMS, email and telephone. It complements rather than replaces Environment and Climate Change Canada warnings and Alert Ready.
Weather, flooding, power outages, major demonstrations and national events may change transport or access. Follow official City, transit, venue and emergency instructions, and keep accommodation details available offline.
