How to Get Around Colombia

Colombia's mountainous terrain makes domestic flying the fastest and often cheapest way to cover long distances -- Avianca and several budget carriers connect Bogotá with every major city, and flying is standard even for trips that look short on a map, since Andean roads wind through mountain passes rather than running direct.

Long-distance buses are extensive and comfortable on major routes, but genuinely slow given the terrain -- a bus ride that covers 300km by road can easily take 8-10 hours. Within cities, Bogotá's TransMilenio bus rapid transit system and app-based rideshares are the standard way to get around.

Getting to smaller colonial towns like Barichara usually means a shared van or private transfer from the nearest larger city rather than public transit directly.
