Nord Pas De Calais Region Guide

Overview

Nord-Pas-de-Calais got its name from the two departments that make up the region, which are the departments of Nord and Pas-de-Calais. It is located on the northern part of the country of France and shares its borders with the country of Belgium. A former region of the Southern Netherlands, Nord-Pas-de-Calais became a part of France in the year 1678. Today, the province of Nord-Pas-de-Calais is the country’s fourth most densely populated regions in the country. Approximately 4 million people reside in the region. That is about 7% of the total population of the country.

Because of its close proximity to the United Kingdom, Nord-Pas-de-Calais is usually the first destination visited by travellers coming from England and other regions in the UK. As such, many consider Nord-Pas-de-Calais as the gateway to the United Kingdom and France.

Nord-Pas-de-Calais provides travellers with a perfect blend of cosmopolitan, urban living and laid-back country lifestyles. The region is famous for its art museums located in the city of Lille. Many of these art museums have been considered second only to the famous Louvre Museum in Paris. The city is also home to old quaint towns that have been beautifully restored to provide travellers a glimpse into the region’s history.

The department of Pas-de-Calais, on the other hand, is the perfect place to sample some of the finest seafood cuisine this part of France. The inviting waters surrounding this department make a great venue to enjoy a variety of different water sports and activities as well.
