Practical information for visiting Gujarat

Connectivity & Internet

Cellular and data coverage is generally strong in major cities and transport corridors but can weaken in remote Kutch, forest, coastal and border areas. Download tickets, permits, maps and accommodation details before leaving a hub.

Keep official booking confirmations available offline. A screenshot is useful, but some permits still require identification or a specific reporting procedure. Confirm whether your accommodation can arrange reliable transport for early or remote departures.

Electricity is generally dependable in cities, though weather and remote conditions can cause interruptions. Carry a power bank and the correct India plug adapter. For urgent police, fire or medical assistance, India's integrated emergency number is 112; local response and cellular coverage vary.

Stay safe (2026 security update)

Check current government travel advice and local authority notices before departure, particularly for border districts, demonstrations and severe weather. Photography near military, port, airport, bridge and border infrastructure may be restricted.

Use hotel-arranged, app-booked or otherwise identifiable transport, especially after dark. Keep valuables discreet in dense markets, stations, festivals and pilgrimage queues. Road risk is often more relevant than violent crime: wear seat belts, avoid fatigued night transfers and do not accept unsafe driving to save time.

Heat, monsoon flooding, cyclone warnings and rough seas can become security issues quickly. Follow IMD and local closure orders. In wildlife areas, remain in the vehicle or designated zone and follow the guide's instructions.

Call 112 for urgent police, fire or medical help.

Health considerations

Ask a qualified clinician to review vaccinations, regular medicines and personal risk before travel. Carry insurance that covers every planned activity and evacuation from remote areas.

From March onward, check IMD heat warnings each morning. Carry safe water, use shade, move strenuous visits to early hours and stop immediately for dizziness, confusion, headache or unusual weakness. Seek medical care for severe symptoms rather than relying only on oral rehydration.

Drink sealed or reliably filtered water and choose food cooked hot in a busy kitchen. Use repellent, long clothing and screened or air-conditioned rooms when mosquito risk is present.

Check the Central Pollution Control Board AQI before a long outdoor day in a city or dusty dry-season area. If you have a respiratory or cardiac condition, follow your clinician's exposure plan. Carry essential medication on Kutch, coast and forest routes, and save 112 plus the nearest suitable clinic offline.

Local laws & etiquette

Gujarat regulates alcohol through prohibition and permit law. Use only current official information and authorised channels; do not assume that foreign nationality or a hotel stay automatically permits purchase or possession.

Dress and behaviour standards vary across temples, mosques, Jain sites and ashrams. Remove shoes where directed, cover shoulders and knees, and follow rules on leather, food, phones and photography. Ask before photographing people, artisans or private homes.

Wildlife, archaeological and border zones may require permits and restrict routes, drones or photography. Use the official operator and carry identification. Do not remove natural, salt-flat or archaeological material.

Public affection may attract attention in conservative settings. During Navratri and other large events, respect access rules, religious meaning and participant consent rather than treating the gathering as an unrestricted photo opportunity.

Emergency information

Emergency number: call 112 for urgent police, fire, medical and other emergency assistance in India.

For weather danger, use India Meteorological Department Gujarat district, marine, heat, heavy-rain and cyclone warnings. Do not enter a closed beach, causeway, wildlife route or salt-flat zone because a map still shows access.

Keep passport or identification copies, insurance contacts, medication details and accommodation information available offline. In remote Kutch, Gir, coastal or hill areas, tell the accommodation or guide where you are going and when you expect to return.

For non-urgent problems, contact the relevant operator first: forest authority for permit issues, railway or bus operator for cancellations, and accommodation for local medical or transport help.
