How to get around Hampi
Getting around
Walk within a cluster. Use the sacred core, Vittala complex and royal centre as separate walking circuits. Wear stable footwear for steps, rock and dust, and carry shade and water.
Use road transport between clusters. Choose an auto-rickshaw, taxi, bicycle or current local service for the longer gaps. Confirm the route, waiting time and price before departure, and use established operators.
Approach through Hosapete. Use Hosapete's railway station and intercity services for the main connection. Allow extra time for the final road leg, especially on holidays.
Treat river crossings as conditional. Check current local-authority and operator information before depending on a crossing. Do not assume a route shown in an old guide is operating.
Do not improvise over boulders. Stay on marked routes because shortcuts can cross fragile archaeology, private land or dangerous rock.

Arrival
Hosapete Junction is the usual railway gateway. Karnataka Tourism currently places it about 13 kilometres from Hampi. Longer-distance road services also use Hosapete, while airport choices require a substantial onward transfer.
Core routes
Virupaksha Temple, Hampi Bazaar, Hemakuta and selected riverside sites form a practical walking group. Vittala lies farther east; the royal and Zenana sectors lie south. Do not force all three into one midday circuit.
Vehicles and bicycles
An authorised local vehicle is the simplest way to join sectors. Bicycles suit confident riders in cooler hours, but traffic, heat, gradients and rough edges matter. Motor vehicles must stay within permitted roads and parking areas.
Accessibility
Some forecourts and road approaches are relatively level, but many monuments involve steps, thresholds, uneven stone and long exposed distances. Ask a local operator to describe the exact route, not merely whether a site is “accessible.”
Return planning
Confirm the final transport to Hosapete or accommodation before sunset. Festival diversions, rain and demand can alter travel time.
