Practical information for visiting Hampi

Connectivity & Internet

Cellular coverage is generally useful around settled areas, but signal and data quality can vary among boulder valleys, outlying monuments and busy festival zones. Download tickets, maps, accommodation details and return transport information before leaving reliable service.

Do not rely on a live map alone. Protected-site gates, pedestrian paths, parking rules and river conditions may make its shortest line unusable.

Power interruptions and weak indoor reception are possible. Carry a charged power bank, keep an offline contact for accommodation or driver, and save the integrated emergency number 112.

Public Wi-Fi should not be treated as secure. Use protected connections for payment or identity documents and keep backup payment available.

Stay safe (2026 security update)

Hampi is generally visited through established tourist routes, but remoteness, heat and rough terrain create practical risks. Avoid isolated boulder paths after dark and tell someone before a longer walk.

Use recognised transport, agree on the fare and route, and keep valuables controlled in crowded temple, festival and ticket areas. Do not leave bags accessible to macaques.

Swimming, jumping from rocks and unsupervised river crossings are dangerous. Water level, current and submerged hazards can change.

Women and solo travellers should apply ordinary transport and accommodation checks, especially for late returns. If a situation feels pressured, move to a staffed or busy public place and call 112 in an emergency.

Health considerations

Heat illness is the primary routine concern. Start early, carry safe water, use sun protection and stop for headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion or unusual weakness.

Wear stable footwear for uneven granite and steps. Rock can be extremely hot in the dry season and slippery after rain; avoid unmarked climbs.

Use mosquito repellent, particularly around water and during wetter months. Choose sealed or reliably filtered water and freshly cooked food.

Do not touch macaques, dogs or other mammals. Any bite or scratch needs prompt medical assessment because rabies occurs in India.

For significant illness or injury, transport may be required to Hosapete or a larger centre. Travel insurance and a clear evacuation plan matter for travellers with complex conditions.

Emergency information

Integrated emergency number: 112 connects police, fire, medical and other urgent services across India. Give a named monument, gate, road, village or geolocation; “Hampi” covers a broad landscape.

Save accommodation, driver, insurer and essential medical contacts offline. At a large site, agree on a meeting point before separating.

For heat illness, move into shade, cool the person and seek medical help when symptoms are severe, worsening or include confusion. Do not continue a walking circuit.

During heavy rain, lightning or changing river conditions, follow district instructions and staff closures. Leave exposed hilltops and never cross a barrier.

Report damage, unsafe climbing or a heritage incident to site staff rather than intervening physically.
