How to get around Mumbai

Getting around

Start with geography, not mode. Colaba, Fort, Kala Ghoda and Marine Drive can be organised as one south-Mumbai sequence. Bandra and the western suburbs belong to another. Sanjay Gandhi National Park requires a northern plan, while Elephanta depends on a harbour crossing.

Suburban rail remains fundamental for long journeys, but commuter peaks can be intense. Use the correct line, direction, class and destination platform; if you are unfamiliar with the system, avoid experimenting with luggage during the busiest periods.

Metro coverage is now useful across several corridors. Lines 2A and 7 connect parts of the western and northern suburbs. The fully operational Line 3 runs between Aarey JVLR and Cuffe Parade, serving the airport corridor, central districts and south Mumbai. Check the operator's current planner rather than assuming every sight is beside a station.

BEST buses provide wider street-level coverage. Taxis and app-booked vehicles are practical for the final gap, late arrivals and routes poorly matched to rail, but road congestion makes journey time uncertain.

Walking conditions change block by block. South Mumbai has strong heritage walks, yet traffic, construction, heat, crowded footways and difficult crossings can interrupt a short route. Verify the last kilometre and group stops on the same side of a major corridor.

Airport

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport uses Terminals 1 and 2. Confirm the airline terminal before travel. The airport publishes a free inter-terminal shuttle and authorised taxi or app-cab options; Line 3 serves the airport corridor, but the complete last-mile route still needs checking.

Metro

Use the current operators' journey tools. Lines 2A and 7 have a tourist pass priced at ₹80 for one day and ₹200 for three days; that product is limited to those lines. Line 3 is a separate underground corridor running from Aarey JVLR to Cuffe Parade.

Suburban rail

Rail is often the fastest long movement. Buy the correct ticket before boarding, note whether a service is fast or slow, and avoid peak periods with large bags if you are unfamiliar with platform changes and crowd flow.

Buses and road transport

BEST buses fill many gaps. For taxis or app-booked cars, confirm the vehicle and fare method before departure. Add time for congestion, security checks and weather rather than trusting the fastest map estimate.

Ferries

Elephanta ferries depart from the Gateway area when services and harbour conditions permit. Confirm the current schedule and return sailing before leaving; monsoon or rough-weather changes can override a planned outing.

Accessibility

Newer rail infrastructure improves step-free travel on some routes, but station access does not guarantee an accessible pavement, jetty, heritage building or cave approach. Check lifts, surfaces, steps, toilets and the final connection as one continuous journey.
