Punjab Culture & Language

Language and literature

Punjabi is the state's official language and is written in Gurmukhi. Hindi and English are also widely encountered, while Urdu remains part of Punjab's literary and pre-Partition inheritance. Sikh scripture, Sufi poetry, qissa narratives and modern writing connect Indian Punjab to a larger cross-border language world.

Faith and public life

Gurdwaras combine worship, music, service and community kitchens. Their openness does not remove expectations of modest dress and conduct. Hindu temples, churches, mosques and Sufi sites also belong to the state's past and present.

Music and performance

Kirtan is devotional music; bhangra and giddha grew from distinct performance settings; contemporary Punjabi popular music circulates globally. Treating all three as one festival soundtrack erases their purposes.

Making

Phulkari embroidery, jutti making, weaving, woodwork and metalwork survive through specialised labour and changing markets. Provenance, material and maker matter more than a souvenir label.

Memory

Partition remains present in family histories on both sides of the border. Museums and memorials provide context, but respectful listening is more valuable than asking strangers to perform inherited trauma.

Language basics

Punjabi is the official language of the state and is written in Gurmukhi. Hindi is widely understood, and English is common in many transport, hotel and visitor settings. Urdu belongs to the wider Punjabi literary and historical world but is less visible in present official use.

Sat sri akaal is a common Sikh greeting and widely used socially; use it respectfully rather than as a performance. Dhannvaad means thank you. Polite tone and patience matter more than perfect pronunciation.

Place names may appear in Punjabi, Hindi and English with variant spellings. Save the Gurmukhi address or a map pin for drivers when possible. At religious sites, follow signs and instructions even if another visitor offers a shortcut.
