Practical information for visiting Rajasthan
Connectivity & Internet
Cellular data and fixed internet are generally strongest in Jaipur and other large cities, established hotel areas and principal road corridors. Coverage becomes less dependable in desert stretches, hill valleys, reserves and remote villages.
Download tickets, maps, permits, accommodation directions and identity documents before leaving a major base. A forest check-post or desert camp may have a signal without reliable data or payment connectivity.
Heat, storms, power cuts and weak backhaul can affect service. Carry a power bank and keep essential reservations in more than one place.
Public Wi-Fi should not be treated as private. Use secure connections for payments and avoid relying on a single app for transport or emergency information.
Stay safe (2026 security update)
Use ordinary urban precautions in stations, markets, fairs and crowded monuments. Keep valuables secured, use authorised transport and agree on a meeting point before entering a dense crowd.
Heat is a major practical risk. Follow official warnings, carry water and stop exertion when symptoms appear. Dust storms, lightning, intense local rain and flash flooding can also interrupt roads or outdoor sites.
Use official wildlife booking and licensed desert or adventure providers. Do not enter closed land, a reserve zone or a remote border area because an informal guide offers access.
Some western areas lie near an international border and may have photography or movement restrictions. Follow posted signs and instructions from police, military or local authorities.
Consult current national travel advice before departure. For the transport choices behind these precautions, use the Getting Around guide once the draft is published.
Health considerations
Discuss routine and destination-specific health preparation with a qualified clinician before travel. Advice depends on route, season, duration and individual health.
Extreme heat is the most immediate seasonal concern. Begin outdoor days early, drink regularly, use shade and reduce activity when the Rajasthan disaster authority or India Meteorological Department issues a warning.
Use treated or reliably bottled water and choose freshly cooked food. Carry oral rehydration supplies and enough regular medicine for a transport delay.
Dust and poor air quality can aggravate respiratory conditions. Check current conditions, keep prescribed medication accessible and move indoors when symptoms increase.
Medical facilities are strongest in larger cities and more limited in remote desert or rural areas. Insurance should cover evacuation and any safari, riding or adventure activity included in the trip.

Local laws & etiquette
At active Hindu, Jain, Muslim and Sikh places of worship, remove footwear where required and dress for worship rather than sightseeing. Follow each site's photography and queue rules, and ask before photographing people, rituals, artisans or private homes.
At Archaeological Survey of India monuments and Rajasthan's state-protected forts, stay outside closed rooms and off walls. Do not touch paintings or fly a drone without explicit permission.
Ranthambore, Sariska, Keoladeo and other protected areas require current permits, assigned routes and compliance with forest staff. Do not collect plants, fossils, sand, stones or wildlife material.
In western border districts, including Jaisalmer and Barmer, obey every photography and movement restriction posted by police, military or district authorities. A map pin or social-media post does not override a sign.
Pushkar, Ajmer and other pilgrimage centres set their own expectations around alcohol, food and conduct. Follow the local rule rather than assuming that a hotel practice applies outside the property.

Emergency information
Dial 112 for urgent police, fire, medical or rescue assistance in Rajasthan. The state disaster-management authority also publishes current control-room and district information.
Give the district, nearest town, road, station, fort gate, reserve zone or other precise landmark and share a map pin when possible. “In the desert” is not a usable rescue location.
On a wildlife, riding or remote-road journey, alert the authorised guide, driver, forest staff or accommodation as well. Follow instructions and do not attempt an untrained rescue.
Keep identity, insurance, medicines, accommodation details and emergency contacts available offline. Carry water, power and sun protection on long transfers.
During heat, dust, lightning, flood or severe-weather alerts, follow the India Meteorological Department and Rajasthan disaster authorities.
