How to get around Udaipur

Getting around

Walk the old city. City Palace, Jagdish Temple, bazaars and several ghats form a compact route. Surfaces can be steep or uneven, and motorcycles, deliveries and crowds share narrow lanes.

Use road transport between clusters. City buses, auto-rickshaws, taxis and authorised app rides serve the wider city. Confirm the fare method and exact entrance before departure.

Treat boats as an activity, not public transit. Lake Pichola services depend on the operator, water, weather and access rights. Verify departure point, route, return and accessibility directly.

Give Sajjangarh its own transfer. The hill approach and Forest Department access controls make it unsuitable as a casual add-on to a packed old-city day.

Plan sunset once. Pichola ghats, Fateh Sagar and Sajjangarh draw traffic at similar hours. Crossing the city to collect more than one sunset view usually produces congestion rather than a better evening.

Airport: Maharana Pratap Airport is at Dabok, outside the urban core. AAI lists road-based onward options; confirm the current prepaid taxi, authorised ride, bus or rental arrangement and pickup point before arrival.

Rail: Udaipur City is the principal station name used by many services, but travellers should verify the station printed on the ticket and the current Indian Railways timetable.

Bus: state and private services use different stands and boarding points. Confirm the operator, terminal and final drop rather than asking only for “Udaipur.”

Old city: arrange large luggage drop-off before entering narrow lanes. Travellers needing step-free access should ask each hotel and attraction about the exact door, slope, stairs and vehicle approach.

Monsoon: intense rain can slow roads and close viewpoints or sanctuary routes. Follow authorities and operators; do not continue past a barrier because a map still shows the road.
