Practical information for visiting Uttarakhand

Connectivity & Internet

Cellular data is generally strongest in Dehradun, Haridwar, Rishikesh, major hill towns and established road corridors. Coverage becomes less reliable in deep valleys, forests, high passes and on treks, and one network may work where another does not.

Download maps, permits, tickets, identity documents, accommodation contacts and emergency numbers before leaving a gateway town. Tell the next host or guide when to expect you and where you last expect a signal.

Guesthouse Wi-Fi can depend on the same cellular or power infrastructure as your phone. Carry a charged power bank, but do not assume electricity or charging at a trail camp, remote village or seasonal settlement.

For a route affected by weather, check official road and district updates whenever service returns. A messaging-group report can be useful context, but it is not authority to pass a police or disaster-management closure.

Stay safe (2026 security update)

Uttarakhand's principal risks are often environmental and transport-related rather than specific to tourists. Heavy rain, landslides, flash floods, rockfall, snow, forest fire and damaged roads can isolate a route.

Register where the current Char Dham or activity system requires it, use recognised providers and obey police, forest, shrine and disaster-management controls. Never walk or drive around a closure because another vehicle did so.

On crowded ghats, markets, buses and pilgrimage routes, keep valuables secured and agree on meeting points. Use authorised transport and verify a vehicle or guide through the responsible operator.

Do not enter a river for a photograph, especially near a rapid, dam release, confluence or during the monsoon. Conditions can change upstream without visible warning.

Share the route, vehicle details and expected arrival time for remote journeys. If plans change, update the person waiting for you as soon as a signal is available.

Health considerations

Altitude matters above the hill stations and on high pilgrimages or treks. Avoid rapid ascent: climb gradually, drink regularly, limit strenuous effort on arrival and descend if symptoms worsen. A fitness level does not prevent altitude illness.

Heat can be severe in Haridwar, Rishikesh and the lower valleys before the monsoon. Avoid midday heat: start early, seek shade and follow official heat guidance. Carry layers in winter and at altitude rather than dressing for the gateway temperature.

Use treated or reliably bottled water and wash hands before eating. Carry personal medicines and enough extra for a road delay; remote clinics may not stock a particular prescription.

Leeches, ticks, mosquitoes and animals are possible in forest and monsoon environments. Use suitable clothing and repellent, never feed monkeys or dogs, and seek prompt medical advice after a bite or scratch.

Report medical conditions to the operator before a strenuous pilgrimage, trek or rafting trip, and use current official health-registration or advisory systems where required.

Local laws & etiquette

Remove footwear where required, dress for active worship and follow separate queues, security checks and photography rules at temples, ashrams and gurdwaras. Do not photograph cremations, private rituals or people at close range without consent.

The Ganga and its tributaries are sacred as well as physically dangerous. Keep bathing areas and ritual access clear, use designated places and never leave waste or offerings wrapped in plastic.

Protected areas, forest trails and adventure activities may require permits, registered operators, fixed entry times or assigned routes. A hotel booking does not replace those permissions.

Ask before photographing a village home, a person at work or a religious performance. Do not fly a drone, light a fire, camp or collect plants, stones or wood without explicit permission.

Alcohol, smoking and non-vegetarian food may be restricted around pilgrimage areas or by an individual property. Follow posted rules and local guidance rather than assuming one policy applies statewide.

Emergency information

Dial 112 for urgent police, fire, medical or rescue assistance in Uttarakhand.

Give the district, road, village, trail or river section, the nearest named landmark and a map pin. A temple or valley name alone may cover several access points.

For a mountain, river, forest or pilgrimage emergency, alert the guide, operator, shrine staff, forest staff, police post or district control room as well. Follow their instructions and do not attempt an untrained rescue.

Keep identity, insurance, medical information, booking details and emergency contacts available offline. Carry power, warm layers, water and essential medicine on any long mountain transfer.

During heavy rain, snow, fire or road disruption, follow current notices from USDMA, the district administration, police and the responsible transport or site authority.
