The ibex year

Not a festival but the rhythm that matters: ibex and chamois come down towards the valley in autumn and are easiest to see from September to November and again in late spring, and the park runs guided wildlife outings in both seasons.

The flowering

Late June and July bring the alpine flowering in Valnontey and on the high pastures, with the botanic garden at its best and the park running guided walks through it.

Ice-climbing season

From late December to March the Lillaz and Valeille falls freeze and the valley fills with climbers from across Europe; the village has an established guiding community around it.

Cross-country season

The trails on the meadow open with the snow and run through to March, and Cogne hosts competitions that draw national-level skiers; on a clear January morning the whole village seems to be out on them.

Sant'Orso and the village feasts

The patronal celebrations and the lace fairs are small, local and unadvertised, and the regional craft fair in Aosta in January takes work from here; the lacemakers still supply it every year.

Christmas in the village

Late December brings the village nativity displays and a small market, and it is the one time of year when Cogne is genuinely full rather than merely occupied.

The queens

The valley sends animals to the regional cow-fighting contests in summer, which is how an alpine village keeps its herd politics in public, and the results matter locally rather more than a visitor would guess.
