How to Get Around Melfi

Getting Around

Melfi is small and steep, and the Vulture needs a car.

The borgo is walkable end to end in fifteen minutes, but it runs downhill from the castle and the streets are narrow and stepped in places.

Parking is outside the walls; do not try to drive into the old town.

The station is on a secondary line with limited service, so most arrivals are by road.

Buses connect Melfi to Potenza, Foggia and the Vulture villages, but service is infrequent and thins at weekends.

A car is effectively necessary for Monticchio, the wineries and Venosa. Distances are short — almost everything is within half an hour — but the roads wind and public transport does not follow them usefully.

The Vulture roads are in reasonable condition; the minor ones around the lakes are narrow and busy on summer Sundays.

Connections from Melfi

How easily, and at what cost, can you combine the region’s main destinations?

RouteBest optionOne-way timeTravel Smart take

Cost compares the options for each route rather than quoting a fare: inexpensive means the price is not a factor in planning, moderate cost means a real line in the budget, and the expensive option is one worth weighing against the alternative. Fares change from year to year; the ranking between them does not.
