Practical Information for visiting Cosenza

Cosenza is a normal Italian city and is safe for visitors.

Ordinary urban care is sufficient. Petty theft occurs around the station and in crowded areas; do not leave anything visible in a parked car.

The real hazards are underfoot and overhead in the old town: steep worn steps, uneven paving, unlit lanes at night, and a number of buildings in poor structural condition with scaffolding and props in the street. Do not enter anything closed off.

This is a seismically active valley with a documented history of destructive earthquakes, and the hillside is prone to landslip after heavy rain.

In the Sila, weather changes fast, snow closes roads in winter, and phone coverage fails in the forest. Tell someone your route if you are walking.

Summer wildfire is a serious risk in the pine woods.

No vaccinations or special precautions are needed; standards are those of Italy generally.

The old town climb is the main practical issue: steep, stepped and long, and genuinely difficult for anyone with limited mobility. The modern city below is flat and easy.

Summer heat in the valley is worse than on the coast because there is no breeze; the Sila is the escape.

On the Sila, altitude, cold and fast weather changes all matter, and ticks are present in the forest and grazing land.

Pharmacies are plentiful in the modern city with a posted rota; the old town has few.

The Ospedale Annunziata is the main hospital, with an emergency department serving the province.

EHIC and GHIC cards are accepted; travel insurance remains worthwhile.
