Pompei Comune Culture

Two visiting publics pass each other in the street here without overlapping. One comes for a Roman city and leaves by mid-afternoon; the other comes to pray at a Marian shrine. The town serves both and belongs mostly to the second.

The devotional culture is the native one. The Pontifical Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary is a Catholic cathedral, Marian pontifical shrine and pontifical minor basilica, and the town grew up around it rather than the other way round. The venerated painting of Our Lady of the Rosary was personally crowned by Pope Paul VI on , and Pope Benedict XVI presented his sixth Golden Rose to the shrine on .

Its founder is now its saint. Bartolo Longo was canonised on , and the shrine describes him in its own words as un innamorato della vita, un avvocato santo — a lover of life, a holy lawyer — who built una nuova città dell'amore, a new city of love. The 2026 centenary of his death is a live local occasion, not a historical footnote.

The working culture is hospitality. The excavations are a driving force behind the economy of the town, and many residents are employed in tourism and hospitality — which shapes the place: a lot of hotels, a lot of restaurants aimed squarely at people with four hours and a coach to catch.
