How to Get Around Pompei Comune
Getting Around
Pompei is flat, small and walkable — the complication is the railways. The excavations have three entrances, and they are served by different lines. Choose the station before you buy the ticket.
For Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra (the main, western entrances): the Circumvesuviana Napoli–Sorrento line, stop Pompei Villa dei Misteri.
For Piazza Anfiteatro (the eastern entrance, and the one beside the modern town and the shrine): the Circumvesuviana Napoli–Poggiomarino line, stop Pompei Santuario.
From the national network: the Trenitalia Napoli–Salerno line stops at Pompei, and Pompei Link — a combined train-and-bus service — connects that station to the park in about 15 minutes.
By road, the A3 Napoli–Salerno motorway crosses the comune, exit Pompei Scavi. By coach, SITA runs from Naples and Salerno, and BUSITALIA Campania lines 4 and 50 from Salerno, the 50 by motorway.
Within the town itself, walk. Shrine to Piazza Anfiteatro is a few minutes; shrine to Porta Marina is roughly a kilometre of level pavement.
Verified against Parco Archeologico di Pompei, October 2026.
The station-to-entrance map is the single most useful thing to know about visiting Pompei, and it is the thing most itineraries get wrong. The site is 64 to 67 hectares inside a wall with limited gates; arriving at the wrong end is not a five-minute correction.
By Circumvesuviana (EAV)
Two separate lines serve the town and they do not serve the same gates. Napoli–Sorrento calls at Pompei Villa dei Misteri, which is the stop for Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra. Napoli–Poggiomarino calls at Pompei Santuario, which is the stop for Piazza Anfiteatro — and, as the name says, for the basilica. If your day is ruins-then-shrine, arrive at Villa dei Misteri and leave from Santuario; you will have walked the site west to east and come out beside the basilica.
By Trenitalia
The Napoli–Salerno line stops at Pompei. It is the faster and more comfortable approach from Naples or Salerno, and the Pompei Link combined train-plus-bus service covers the last stretch to the Archaeological Park in about 15 minutes.
By coach
SITA from Naples and Salerno; BUSITALIA Campania line 4 from Salerno, and line 50, an express coach from Salerno by motorway.
By car
Motorway A3 Napoli–Salerno, exit Pompei Scavi. The motorway crosses the comune, which makes driving genuinely easy here — unusual for a Campanian destination — though parking near Porta Marina fills early in season.
Reaching the park's other sites
The same authority runs sites beyond the town, on the same lines: Oplontis at Torre Annunziata (Circumvesuviana Napoli–Sorrento or Napoli–Poggiomarino), Boscoreale at the Villa Regina stop on Napoli–Sorrento, and the Stabiae sites at Castellammare di Stabia, reached with EAV bus line 2.
