Bologna's calendar is a trade-fair calendar
This is the practical fact that matters most, and it is unlike Florence or Venice. Bologna's year is shaped less by festivals than by BolognaFiere, the exhibition centre on Viale della Fiera, whose international fairs are large enough to fill the city's hotel stock and move room rates sharply. Checking the fair calendar before booking is worth more here than checking the weather.
The big fairs
- Cersaie, the Salone Internazionale della Ceramica per l'Architettura e dell'Arredobagno, runs in late September — 21–25 in its most recent edition. It is one of the world's principal ceramics and bathroom-design fairs, and Marconi Express and TPER run an integrated airport-to-fairground transport package around it.
- SAIE, the construction fair, runs in October; its 60th edition opened on Wednesday 7 October.
- The Bologna Children's Book Fair is the city's best-known international event and the publishing industry's principal children's rights fair, held in spring.
What this means for a visit
The pattern is consistent and easy to plan around. Fair weeks are expensive and full; the weeks immediately either side are ordinary. Unlike a city whose events close streets, Bologna's fairs happen out at the exhibition centre — so they affect what a room costs and whether one is available, not what you can do in the centre.
The rest of the year
Underneath the fairs, Bologna's calendar is driven by the university term, which is the real rhythm of the place: the city is fullest and most itself between October and June, and noticeably emptied during the summer break. The city is also a UNESCO City of Music, and the Teatro Comunale's season runs through the same months. For listings, Bologna Welcome is the city's own tourist information service rather than any aggregator, with infopoints in Piazza Maggiore and Piazza del Nettuno.
