Modena Geography

Modena lies at about thirty metres on the Po plain, between the Secchia and the Panaro, two rivers running down from the Apennines to the Po. The land is entirely flat, intensively farmed, and among the most productive agricultural ground in Italy.

South of the city the plain rises quickly into Apennine foothills — Castelvetro, Vignola, the Lambrusco Grasparossa hills — and then into mountains reaching past 2,000 metres at Monte Cimone, the highest point in the northern Apennines.

That climb matters for the vinegar. Traditional balsamic is aged in attics precisely because attics are not climate-controlled: the barrels need the summer heat and the winter cold, and the continental swing of the Po valley supplies it.

The plain floods. The Secchia and Panaro are embanked and have broken through in living memory, most seriously in 2014 and 2020, which is why watercourse management is a live local subject.
