How to Get Around Trieste

Trieste is compact along the shore and steep everywhere else.

The lower city — the square, the Borgo Teresiano, the canal, the seafront — is flat and entirely walkable.

Everything above it is not: San Giusto, the Carso and most residential districts involve serious climbs, and the city runs buses and lifts to help.

Buses are frequent and reach Miramare, the Carso villages and the Slovenian border.

The Opicina tram, a historic funicular tramway up the escarpment, has had long service suspensions; check before relying on it.

Parking is difficult in the centre and easier above it.

A car helps for the Carso and the coast towards Duino, and is a liability in the lower city.

In a strong bora, expect services to be curtailed at short notice.
