  1. 10th century One of numerous towers is raised here as a defence against Saracen attacks -- the ancient name Castrum Brachiani implies it, and the castle's earliest history is inferred from it.
  2. In the eleventh century the Prefetti di Vico family acquire the neighbouring territory and turn the tower into a castle.
  3. Ferdinand Gregorovius dated the Orsini possession of Bracciano to this year. From 1375 it is a papal possession.
  4. The Colonna pope Martin V confirms the fiefdom of Bracciano in the Orsini branch of Tagliacozzo. Under them the town becomes flourishing and famous throughout Italy for its castle.
  5. Napoleone Orsini begins the enlargement that produces the present castle, to a design by Francesco di Giorgio Martini. His son Virginio completes it in 1485. Antoniazzo Romano paints much of the interior decoration.
  6. Sixtus IV, fleeing the plague in Rome, is received here; the Sala Papalina in one of the corner towers commemorates it, and the rooms he used are frescoed by Taddeo and Federico Zuccari.
  7. Papal troops under Prospero Colonna ravage the city and the castle. A new line of walls is built afterwards.
  8. Charles VIII of France stops at Bracciano with his troops on the march against Rome, and the Orsini are excommunicated for it.
  9. Alexander VI sends his son Giovanni di Candia with a papal army against the castle and the Orsini hold it. Cesare Borgia attempts the same a few years later and also fails.
  10. Paolo Giordano I Orsini marries Isabella de' Medici, daughter of Cosimo I, and receives the title duke of Bracciano. The family's lavish living will eventually tell on the city's finances; Paolo Giordano II, patron of arts and letters, is probably the last great ruler.
  11. The decline ends in a sale: the castle goes to Livio Odescalchi, nephew of Pope Innocent XI, whom Leopold I makes a Prince of the Holy Roman Empire for services against the Turks. The family still retain it.
  12. After the French occupation the castle is looted of its valuable furniture. It passes to Duke Marino Torlonia until 1848, when it is sold to Prince Livio Odescalchi III.
  13. Prince Livio Odescalchi IV opens the historical museum inside the castle.
