Noli Geography, Climate & Nature

Geography

Noli sits in an inlet with a cape at each end. It lies on the coast of the Riviera di Ponente, closed to the east by the island of Bergeggi and to the south-west by Capo Noli, at the mouth of the Luminella torrent.

The comune is 9.67 square kilometres and most of it is uphill. The capoluogo stands at 2 metres; the inland frazioni are Tosse and Voze, and Noli borders Finale Ligure, Spotorno and Vezzi Portio.

The headland is the walk. Many paths climb the hill above the town; one of about three kilometres reaches the summit of Capo Noli, the highest point of the promontory at 276 metres.

Behind it opens a plateau. The altopiano delle Manie runs from Noli to Finale Ligure — a large pinewood with some vine cultivation, and, beside the locality of Le Manie, inside a large natural rock formation resembling a cave, a Neolithic archaeological site found recently.

Climate patterns

The coast here is sheltered by a wall of mountains, and that is the whole explanation. The climate of this stretch is mesomediterranean with a sub-humid ombrotype. The ridge running inland between Monte Settepani and Pian dei Corsi, almost always between 1,000 and 1,400 metres, forms an important climatic barrier, preventing the cold air masses that sit over the Po plain and the northern slope of the Ligurian Prealps in winter from reaching the coast directly.

The northern winds arrive warmer than they left. Descending towards the coast they heat up by adiabatic compression, which is why the shore has mild winters.

No temperature figures are quoted here for Noli itself. The published means read for this page describe the Finale Ligure littoral rather than Noli, and the two comuni are adjacent but not identical; the structural account above is what the sources support for this stretch of coast.

The practical version. Sea air, little frost, a long shoulder season, and a headland at 276 metres immediately behind the town that is windier and cooler than the beach.

Habitats & biodiversity

The hills behind Noli are a protected site, and it is shared with five other comuni. A site of community interest proposed under the Natura 2000 network for Liguria covers ground across Noli, Bergeggi, Quiliano, Spotorno, Vado Ligure and Vezzi Portio, listed for its natural, faunal and geological interest.

It is woodland between three summits. The site lies in the wooded area between Monte Mao, Rocca dei Corni and Monte Mortou, holding Mediterranean macchia, grassy areas and agricultural cultivation, along with some beech woods, cork-oak stands and patches of calluneto (Calluna vulgaris).

Three plants are named, and one of them is in trouble. The Campanula di Savona (Campanula sabatia), the Convolvolo di Savona (Convolvulus sabatius) and the fiordaliso a pigna (Leuzea conifera) are all recorded here — the last at risk of extinction in the wild. Two of the three carry Savona in their names, which is the measure of how local they are.

Above the town the cover changes with height. The altopiano delle Manie, running from Noli to Finale Ligure, is largely a pinewood, with some vine cultivation worked within it.

Wildlife & birds

Two amphibians are what this area is listed for, and both are hard to see. The Natura 2000 site shared with Bergeggi, Quiliano, Spotorno, Vado Ligure and Vezzi Portio records the pelodite punteggiato (Pelodytes punctatus), described as very rare, and the geotritone (Speleomantes strinatii), a cave salamander.

A cave salamander is a limestone animal. Finding Speleomantes here fits the ground: this coast is karst, the caves of the Finalese produced some of Italy's most important prehistoric finds, and a Neolithic site was recently identified inside a rock formation by Le Manie.

The habitat is a mosaic rather than a forest. Macchia, grassland, cultivation, beech, cork oak and heath between Monte Mao, Rocca dei Corni and Monte Mortou — which is what supports a species list this specific on so little ground.

Beyond those two, no fauna inventory is published for Noli in any source read for this page, and none is invented here.
