How to get around Varigotti
Getting around
Varigotti is small enough to cross on foot and that is how it works. The whole frazione sits on a strip 200 to 300 metres wide between the sea and the hills, with the Aurelia running through it, the borgo along the shore and the promontory closing the eastern end.
Its railway station is gone. The coastal line outside the tunnels was repeatedly cut by landslides; after the fatal Malpasso slide of 1949, rockfall shelters were built at the tunnel mouths, and in 1977 a new line entirely in tunnel was opened further inland. The old station is now private property, and the trackbed that ran through the village has become a public car park.
The working station is Finale Ligure Marina. It sits on the Genoa-Ventimiglia line, in the comune's seafront nucleus, roughly five kilometres west along the coast. TPL Linea buses 40 and 40/ run between that seafront and Finalborgo; the Museo Archeologico del Finale, which publishes those routes, advises checking Trenitalia and TPL Linea for current times.
No local timetable, ZTL or parking tariff is published for Varigotti itself by the comune or by anything else read for this page. By car, the motorway exit for the comune is Finale Ligure on the A10.
The comune is at Via Pertica 29. Comune di Finale Ligure, Via Pertica 29, 17024 Finale Ligure, switchboard 019 689011.

Connections from Varigotti
How easily, and at what cost, can you combine the region’s main destinations?
| Route | Best option | One-way time | Travel Smart take |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varigotti and Finale Ligure | Businexpensive | ~5 min by road | Excellent day-trip connection. Varigotti works well as a base for Finale Ligure. |
Cost compares the options for each route rather than quoting a fare: inexpensive means the price is not a factor in planning, moderate cost means a real line in the budget, and the expensive option is one worth weighing against the alternative. Fares change from year to year; the ranking between them does not.
The railway story is the transport story here, and it is worth the detail. Between Varigotti and Capo Noli the coast is vertical, crumbling rock hundreds of metres high, and the stretch of line outside the tunnels needed continuous maintenance. After one more landslide in the Malpasso area, which killed two engine drivers in 1949, rockfall shelters were built at the mouths of the two tunnels; they are still visible. In 1977 the line was replaced by a new inland route entirely in tunnel.
What that leaves on the ground. The old Varigotti station is private property. The trackbed through the village is a public car park — the only parking the record describes, and no tariff for it is published.
Reaching the comune. Finale Ligure Marina station on the Genoa-Ventimiglia line, about 1.6 km from Finalborgo; TPL Linea buses 40 and 40/ (Savona-Finalborgo), stopping at Finalborgo Centro; and the A10 exit Finale Ligure. Inside Finalborgo's walls car access is restricted, with paid and disc parking outside them and a free Municipio car park holding disabled spaces. All of this is published by the Museo Archeologico del Finale, not by the comune.
The comune publishes two freephone fault lines and nothing else operational. Water-main or sewer faults, 800 995105; ordinary maintenance of lighting, asphalt and urban greenery, 800 991952. No individual office publishes a direct line or an opening hour, and no tourist office is published at all.
Getting to the promontory is walking. Punta Crena and the old church on it are reached on foot from the village; no path grade, distance or walking time is published for them anywhere read for this page.
