How to Get Around Mantua

Mantua is flat, small and built for bicycles — it has one of the higher rates of cycling in Italy, extensive bike lanes, and rental is cheap and easy. For most visitors this is simply the right way to get around.

Everything in the historic centre is walkable in twenty minutes or less, including the Palazzo Te, and much of it is pedestrianised or restricted to residents.

Buses cover the outskirts and the province but are rarely needed by a visitor. Driving into the centre is restricted, with parking on the edges near the lakes.

Boats run onto the lakes and down the Mincio from the Lago di Mezzo, and cycle paths follow the river north towards Peschiera and Lake Garda, which is a serious day ride rather than a stroll.
