How to Get Around Ascoli Piceno

Ascoli is flat, compact and easy, which is a relief after most Italian hill cities.

The old city sits on level ground between the rivers and is crossed on foot in twenty minutes; the centre is largely pedestrian.

Parking is in paid car parks around the walls, with free areas a little further out, and escalators and lifts link some of them to the centre.

The station is about a kilometre from Piazza del Popolo, on a branch line rather than a main one.

Local buses serve the modern districts and the villages of the Tronto valley.

A car is needed for the Sibillini, the Laga and the Piceno hill villages; nothing else requires one.

Roads up both mountain ranges are narrow and winding, and several remain affected by the 2016 earthquakes.
