The vineyard year is the calendar

Barolo is a village of 750 people and does not run a festival programme on the scale of its name. What it has is an agricultural year, and the year is worth planning around.

  • Winter — pruning. The quietest period, when cellars receive by appointment and growers have time. Several restaurants close.
  • Spring — the vines break, and this is when a cellar visit is most likely to turn into a long conversation.
  • September — the vendemmia. The most interesting time to be in a working cellar and the hardest time to get an appointment, because everyone is picking. Book weeks ahead and expect to be fitted around the fruit.
  • Late autumn — the new vintage goes into barrel, and the fog comes down.

What happens nearby, and matters here

The events that fill Barolo's restaurants are not Barolo's own.

  • The Alba International White Truffle Fair, 10 October to 6 December 2026 in its 96th edition, pushes visitors through all these villages. Book every meal in that window.
  • The World White Truffle Auction is held at the castle of Grinzane Cavour, fifteen minutes away, and raises money for charity.
  • Cheese, Slow Food's biennial international gathering of artisan cheesemakers, is at Bra.

The castle, year-round

The WiMu is open 10:30 to 19:00 with last admission at 18:00, at €9, and the castle also holds a regional wine shop. It does not publish a weekly closing day, so confirm on +39 0173 386697 if you are travelling specifically for it.

Planning

Two rules cover almost everything here. Book the restaurant — there are few and they fill. And book the cellar — visits are by appointment, and a day's notice is the minimum.
