How to Get Around Nuoro

Nuoro is walkable; the Barbagia is not reachable without a car.

The centre is compact and hilly, and the museums are all within walking distance of each other.

Monte Ortobene is a short drive or a long climb up from the town.

Buses connect Nuoro to Olbia, Cagliari and Sassari, and to the larger Barbagia villages — but village services are built around school and work hours and are close to useless for day trips.

The train is a slow branch line to Macomer, and the tourist Trenino Verde runs scenic narrow-gauge routes through the interior in summer, which is worth doing for its own sake rather than as transport.

A car is effectively required. Roads are good but winding, distances take longer than they look, and fuel stations are sparse between villages.

In the Supramonte, tracks need high clearance and several routes need a guide.
