Bibione Geography

Bibione occupies a low sandy strip at the mouth of the Tagliamento, at the eastern end of the Venetian coast where it meets Friuli. The beach is wide and the sea shelves gradually, as it does along this whole shore.

Behind the resort the ground is reclaimed marsh and lagoon, drained in the twentieth century and lying barely above sea level, kept dry by embankments and pumping stations.

Fragments of the original dune and pine belt survive at the edges of the built-up area, and the lagoon and dune system at the Tagliamento mouth to the east is the largest piece of natural coast nearby — the reason this end of the riviera still has somewhere to walk.

Beneath all of it is the thermal aquifer that supplies the spa, which is what makes the geology here more than background.
