Montagnana
Montagnana Geography
Montagnana sits on the flat alluvial plain between the Euganean Hills to the north-east and the Adige to the south, in the Bassa Padovana.
The absolute flatness is the town's defining condition. It is why the walls could be built as a regular circuit rather than following contours, why the whole thing is visible from any approach road, and why the moat could be water-filled from the surrounding drainage.
The land around is intensively farmed and criss-crossed with drainage channels, and on clear days the Euganean cones stand up on the horizon — the only relief in the view.
