How to Get Around Martinique

A hire car is close to essential. Public transport is limited outside Fort-de-France, the sights are spread across the island, and the roads are good French ones — a dual carriageway around the capital and well-surfaced mountain roads elsewhere. Driving is on the right and traffic into Fort-de-France in the morning is genuinely slow.

Getting in is through Aime Cesaire airport at Le Lamentin, with direct flights from Paris and regional connections; ferries run to Guadeloupe, Dominica and Saint Lucia.

Buses: the Mozaik network covers the island but is infrequent outside the urban area. Taxicos, shared minibuses, fill some gaps and run to no fixed timetable.

The ferry across the bay from Fort-de-France to Trois-Ilets and Pointe du Bout is quick, cheap and much better than driving around.

Taxis are metered and expensive; there is no Uber.
