How to Get Around Yucatan Peninsula

Getting in: Cancun is one of the busiest airports in Latin America with direct flights worldwide; Merida and Cozumel also take international services.

ADO buses are the backbone — comfortable, air-conditioned, punctual and cheap, linking Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Valladolid, Merida and Campeche frequently. For most itineraries this is all you need.

Colectivos, shared vans, cover shorter hops and the cenote routes, and are very cheap.

A hire car is worth it for the Puuc route, Calakmul and the less-visited cenotes. Roads are good and flat; watch for topes, the severe speed bumps that appear without warning in every village, and avoid driving at night.

The Maya Train now links several cities around the peninsula; services and reliability are still settling.
