Mount Desert Island is home to the lovely and well-known town of Bar Harbor, Maine, and was originally settled by the Wabanaki tribe. Typically the most common activities in this area for the local Indians was hunting, fishing, and gathering the local native foods. It was later settled by European explorers in 1763 and incorporated as a town in 1796. Shipbuilding, lobstering, and fishing became the main sources of income to the local citizens of the town for many decades. Cadillac Mountain is nearby and very popular in the summer months for some great hiking trails, and in the winter months for some of the best skiing around. 4. Water enthusiasts will have the pleasure of deep sea fishing, sailing, kayaking, or canoeing in the beautiful waters around the island.
