Ocracoke Culture

Longtime islanders speak with the Ocracoke brogue, a distinct accent (locally called "hoi toider" after its pronunciation of "high tide") that developed from the island's isolation and has drawn linguists studying it as one of the most distinctive regional dialects in the United States. Commercial fishing remains a real, working part of the local economy rather than a tourist backdrop, and the island supports a small community of working artists and craftspeople alongside it.
