How Was Ocracoke Built
Ocracoke Village grew organically around Silver Lake's natural harbor rather than to any planned layout, with narrow lanes following old cart paths between home lots. A paved connector road and regular vehicle ferry service only reached the island in the 1950s; before that, boats were the only practical way in or out, which is part of why the village's older core remained compact and concentrated near the harbor rather than spreading out.
