Begin with geography. The Golden Gate Bridge and Presidio explain the entrance to the bay; the Embarcadero traces a working waterfront remade after the freeway's removal; hills and cable cars show how movement shaped the street grid.
Alcatraz requires an official ferry ticket from Pier 33 and deserves time for both the federal prison and the 1969–71 Indigenous occupation. Golden Gate Park, the Palace of Fine Arts and the Exploratorium broaden the picture, while Chinatown, the Castro and Mission streets are neighbourhoods rather than enclosed attractions. Lombard Street and Pier 39 are brief stops, not organising principles for the whole visit.
