Overview

Bogotá sits above 2,500 meters, where the weather can swing from bright sun to hail in the same afternoon — which makes it a fitting home for a garden that packs nearly the full vertical range of Colombia's ecosystems into just 19.5 hectares. At the Jardín Botánico José Celestino Mutis, a few minutes' walk carries you from desert cacti to páramo grasses to a glass-domed tropical rainforest, climates that in the wild sit hundreds of kilometers and several thousand meters of altitude apart.

The garden takes its name from José Celestino Mutis, an 18th-century Spanish priest, botanist, and astronomer who spent over three decades cataloguing New Granada's plant life. Founded in 1955, it's less a monument to him than a continuation of his project — the same obsessive cataloguing of Colombian flora, done with living collections instead of illustrations.

Plan your visit

The garden is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm, and weekends and holidays from 9am to 5pm. It draws a modest few hundred visitors a day, so even the popular domes rarely feel crowded. There's an on-site café for a break between sections, and a children's program (the Club Botánico de Ciencias para Niños) runs regularly for younger visitors curious about the collection.
