Ecuador
Ecuador packs four distinct geographic regions into a relatively small country. The Sierra, running down the country's center, holds the Andes' twin parallel ranges and the "Avenue of the Volcanoes," a corridor of some of the highest peaks in South America, including Cotopaxi and Chimborazo, whose summit is technically the point on Earth farthest from its center due to the planet's equatorial bulge.
The Coast (Costa), to the west, is a lowland region of beaches, mangroves, and Ecuador's largest city, Guayaquil, while the Oriente, east of the Andes, drops into Amazon rainforest that makes up roughly a third of the country's territory despite holding a small share of its population.
The Galápagos Islands, a volcanic archipelago some 1,000 kilometers off the mainland coast in the Pacific, are geologically young and isolated enough to have produced entirely unique wildlife found nowhere else on Earth.
