How to Get Around Northern Thailand

Getting in: Chiang Mai International has flights from Bangkok in about an hour and direct regional connections. The overnight sleeper train from Bangkok takes twelve to thirteen hours and is a comfortable way to arrive.

Songthaews — red pickup trucks with benches — are Chiang Mai’s shared transport, flagged down and paid per person for short hops. Agree the fare if you want it to yourself.

Scooters are how most visitors get around, cheap and easy to hire. You need an international driving permit with a motorcycle entitlement; without it your insurance is void and police checkpoints issue fines. Helmets are compulsory and enforced.

Cars are worth it for the Mae Hong Son loop if you are not confident on two wheels; the road is excellent but relentlessly curved.

Buses and minivans connect the northern towns frequently and cheaply. Grab works in Chiang Mai for cars and bikes.
