How to Get Around Tunisia

Louages — shared long-distance taxis, usually white minibuses with a coloured stripe — are the backbone of Tunisian travel. They leave from a station when full rather than on a timetable, are cheap, reasonably fast and go everywhere. This is how most people get between towns.

Trains run by SNCFT link Tunis with Sousse, Sfax, Monastir, Gabes and Bizerte, and are comfortable and cheap if slow. The metro in Tunis and the Sahel light rail are useful locally.

Buses run by SNTRI cover the intercity routes including the long haul south.

Driving gives you the archaeological sites, which are awkward on public transport. Roads are decent; urban driving is assertive, and police checkpoints are routine and polite — carry your documents. Avoid driving at night outside towns.

Flying internally connects Tunis with Djerba and Tozeur, which saves a long drive.

Ferries reach Djerba, though a causeway also connects it to the mainland.
