How to Get Around Maine

Getting Around

A car is necessary for almost any Maine trip. The state is large, public transport outside Portland is minimal, and the best of the coast is on peninsulas that lead nowhere else.

Portland International Jetport is the main airport; many visitors fly into Boston instead and drive up, which takes about two hours to the southern beaches.

Route 1 runs the length of the coast and is the scenic option, and in July and August a slow one. The turnpike inland is faster when covering distance is the point.

In Acadia, the free Island Explorer shuttle covers the park and Bar Harbor in season, and the Cadillac Summit Road requires a vehicle reservation. Ferries serve the inhabited islands from Portland, Rockland and Bass Harbor.
